“I would rather have a bank account full of money than a closet full of clothes”
Since January I have made a challenge to not buy any clothes for a whole year. Now there are a few exceptions but we will get back to those.
First let’s think about our closets for a minute. If you are like me, you have lots of clothes way more than you actually need. Now think about how much money you spend on unneeded clothing purchases on a monthly or a even a yearly basis. Now think of all the money you could save if you just started wearing only the clothes you already have and not buy anything new. You would also discover that you had many clothes that you didn’t even wear. So let’s go in to the rules I made for myself during this clothing challenge.
1.birthdays, blessings and Christmas don’t count. If you have clothes given to you such as birthday gifts or Christmas or even as blessings then accept them and wear them. These don’t count because you didn’t buy them.
2.Give your self 3 grace items. What I mean by this is give your self some grace. We all slip up, so you impulsly bought that shirt no big deal just take it off your grace item list or if you need a new swimsuit then buy it but know that item comes off your grace list. This challenge isn’t about completely not buying clothes. It is about cutting your spending on clothes way down and having that money for other things.
3.Any type of undergarments don’t count as clothing purchases, these are absolute needs that you can not go without so these don’t count. That boutique shirt that caught your eye on Facebook isn’t a need.
4. For most of us we have a select few favorites in our closet that we wear all the time and all the other the others just sit there not hardly getting worn. This is a great time to wear those pieces you don’t love so much. Reinvent them by throwing a cardigan over it or just wear it the way it is and put a smile on your face because of all the money you are saving.
5.Wash clothes on gentle cycle and hang to dry. This will help your clothes last longer and come out better looking and with not buying any clothes for a year you are going to want to make them last as long as possible.
To some of you this may seem extreme but sometimes you have to take extreme measures if you want to follow your dreams. I heard a saying once and it said “I would rather have a bank account full of money than a closet full of clothes. Think about the life you could live if you didn’t spend all your money every month. Think about how much money you could give away to a cause you believed in if you didn’t spend all your money on stuff each month.
